Origin of the runner
Vhinic Marquez hails from Meycauayan, Bulacan. He immersed himself in studying various running techniques, nutrition plans, and training regimens through books, online resources, and observing seasoned runners. This autodidactic approach allowed him to craft a personalized running style that suited his physical capabilities and goals. Trial and error played a significant role in his learning process. He experimented with different running shoes, dietary supplements, and training schedules, continuously tweaking his approach based on the outcomes.
Running Experience
Vhinic’s running career began in March 2022 with a simple goal: to try walking and jogging. This modest start quickly evolved into a passionate pursuit. Despite his initial weight and lack of experience, Vhinic achieved a significant milestone by completing a 10km sub-1 challenge in Baguio within three months. This accomplishment ignited his enthusiasm for running and led to a series of races. To date, he has participated in one 5km race, three 10km races, six 21km races, one 10km trail run, two 21km trail runs, three 32km races, and seven full marathons.
Each race added to his wealth of experience, teaching him valuable lessons about endurance, strategy, and mental fortitude. The transition from short distances to marathons was not without its challenges. Vhinic had to adapt his training to accommodate longer distances, focusing on building stamina and resilience. He also ventured into trail running, which required him to develop new skills for navigating rugged terrains and coping with varying weather conditions. His dedication and adaptability are evident in his impressive race record, showcasing his growth as a runner.
Why He Started Running
Vhinic’s motivation to start running stemmed from a critical health wake-up call. Standing 5’8” tall and weighing 118kg, his lifestyle was marked by excessive smoking (2-3 packs a day) and regular heavy drinking. Contracting COVID-19 served as an eye-opener, but it was his children’s plea on New Year’s Eve 2021 that truly spurred him into action. They told him, “Daddy, we don’t want you to die young, please stop drinking and smoking.” From that day, he quit smoking and drinking heavily, embracing a healthier lifestyle.
This pivotal moment marked the beginning of his transformation. He realized that his habits were not only detrimental to his health but also setting a poor example for his children. Running became a means to reclaim his health and demonstrate to his family the importance of perseverance and self-care. The initial stages were tough; Vhinic had to overcome physical limitations and break long-standing habits. However, his determination to change for the sake of his loved ones fueled his commitment to running.
Motivations for Running
Vhinic’s primary motivation is his family. His desire to lead a healthy life for the sake of his children and wife drives him. Additionally, he is inspired by the people he has influenced and taught along the way. Starting out, Vhinic found little guidance from others, which fueled his determination to share his knowledge with fellow runners.
