Running for Health, Motivation, and Growth: Ric Raymond’s Journey
The Start of a New Chapter
Ric Raymond’s journey into the world of running began in April 2024. A seasoned athlete with a background in rugby, basketball, and strength training, Ric initially assumed that his fitness levels would make the transition to running smooth. He completed his first 5KM run in about 40 minutes, an experience that was both humbling and enlightening.
“I thought my fitness from other sports would translate directly to running,” Ric recalls. “But running has its own set of challenges and mechanics that I had to learn and adapt to.”
The catalyst for Ric’s newfound passion was the announcement of the MILO Marathon’s return to Legazpi. Eager to participate, he embarked on a journey to train specifically for running, diving into the technical aspects and learning the mechanics required to improve his performance.
Running for Mental Health
While physical fitness was a significant factor, running soon became more than just a physical activity for Ric—it turned into a vital part of his mental health regimen.
“Running helps me clear my head and improves my mood,” Ric explains. “It’s a form of therapy, a way to release stress and find mental clarity.”
This mental health benefit became a powerful motivator. The rhythmic pounding of his feet on the pavement, the steady pace of his breath, and the solitude of long runs provided a meditative escape from the daily grind. Running, for Ric, became a sanctuary where he could process thoughts, find peace, and maintain a balanced state of mind.
Inspiration to Keep Going
One of the key elements that inspire Ric to keep running is the simple fact that he can. Observing those who are physically unable to run instills a sense of gratitude and motivation in him.
“When I see people who can’t run, it makes me feel grateful that I can,” says Ric. “I don’t want to take that for granted.”
Additionally, Ric’s competitive spirit fuels his dedication. The desire to lay the groundwork for a long, healthy, and active life keeps him lacing up his running shoes and hitting the road regularly. Each run is not just a step towards personal fitness, but a stride towards a sustainable lifestyle that promotes overall well-being.
Advice for New and Aspiring Runners
Ric’s journey has provided him with valuable insights that he is eager to share with new and aspiring runners. His primary piece of advice is to start slowly and build gradually.
“Start by running or walking 5KM without focusing on the time,” Ric advises. “Once you can finish the 5KM without walking, set a target time and aim to complete it.”
Ric emphasizes the importance of building a strong foundation. As runners become more comfortable with shorter distances, they can gradually increase their mileage. This methodical approach helps in preventing injuries and fosters a sustainable running habit.
“We all learn to push through the pain and discomfort,” Ric says. “It’s about evening out our breathing and retraining the voice in our head to encourage us to keep going instead of yelling at us to stop.”
Maintaining a positive attitude is crucial on this journey. Ric believes that a mindset focused on progress, rather than perfection, helps runners stay motivated and enjoy the process.
Looking Ahead
As Ric continues to run, he remains open about his future in the sport.
“I’m not sure what my future holds with running,” he admits. “But for now, I’m just locked in.”
This open-minded approach allows Ric to enjoy each run without the pressure of long-term expectations. His focus is on the present, finding joy in the act of running itself and appreciating the physical and mental benefits it brings.
Ric Raymond’s story is a testament to the transformative power of running. From its physical challenges to its mental health benefits, running has become an integral part of his life. For those looking to start their own running journey, Ric’s experience offers valuable lessons in patience, perseverance, and positivity. As he continues to run, he embodies the spirit of an athlete who is always striving for personal growth and well-being.
